Male monastery of the Cistercian order, its construction began in 1168. With his foundation closely linked to the figure of Teresa Afonso, Egas Moniz wife, the monastic complex was greatly enlarged in the XVII and XVIII centuries, highlighting a new and monumental cloister in the XVIII century, with trace of the Maltese architect Carlos Gimach. Counting in its collection with works by some of the biggest names of Painting in Portugal, such as Vasco Fernandes (Grão Vasco), Bento Coelho da Silveira or Pascoal Parente, with the extinction of the Religious orders in Portugal in 1834, the church was converted into a parish church and the part of the monastic dependencies sold to private. Classified as National Monument in 1997, in 2002 under the protocol with the Lamego Bishopric, the Portuguese State began the progressive restoration of the buildings and its collection. The integration, in 2009 in the project Vale do Varosa, along with two more monuments (St. John Monastery of Tarouca and St. Anthony Monastery of Ferreirim), made possible the opening of the space to the public in October 2011, space where you can still visit the museum centre and the exhibition "Fragments Expressions of Religious Art of the St. Mary Monastery of Salzedas”. The Monastery of St. Mary of Salzedas like St. John of Tarouca, it’s one of most visited in the Douro region and Varosa.
