30 Oct. 2017A new approach to the Battle of La LysA book to be read and intended to be a reference for the History of Portuguese participation in the First World War. The idea was defended this Saturday in the Museum of Lamego, during the public ceremony of presentation of the work «La Lys 1917-1918».
Authored by Miguel Nunes Ramalho, the book brought to the museum more than a hundred people who wanted to be present and honor the lamecense David Magno, around which revolves the entire work.
Throughout more than 450 pages, Miguel Nunes Ramalho brings new reflections and approaches on what really happened on the battlefield of La Lys on April 9, 1918, within the infantry battalion 13 of Vila Real, revealing the divisions of the Portuguese military institution, based on the analysis of the historiographical production and the documentary sources, aiming to contribute to fill the void of historiography about Portugal's intervention in the Great War.
During the presentation session of "La Lys 1917-1918" and after a "trip" for the work, Colonel Nuno Lemos Pires recalled that despite the entire process involving Captain David Magno, in which he is accused of treason, for overcoming loyalty and honor, when in court, the truth of the facts about La Lys is answered. Also Joaquim Melo, who was also responsible for presenting the work, sees the publication as an opportunity for reflection and as an example of moral heroicity.
"La Lys 1917-1918" converges towards the deconstruction of myths, in an approach that has in the before, during and after the battle an exemplary case of divisions between the military and where the action of David Magno, seen as a born leader, serves the whole investigation. In this context, the author recalled that his work is another contribution to the knowledge of the First World War, leaving an invitation to read.
The public presentation of "La Lys 1917-1918. Captains Benedict Rome and Davis Great. Myth and Reality. The Divisions in the Portuguese Military Institution "was also attended by the Director of the Museum of Lamego, Luís Sebastian, and Victor Raquel, representing the Frontier of Caos Editora, as well as some musical moments with Joana Barradas at the piano and with the Senior University Jerónimo Cardoso.
