25 Oct. 2017 Intervention in the Mancelos Monastery The Monastery of São Martinho de Mancelos, in Amarante, is preparing to receive conservation and safeguard works as of this week.

The signing of the contract for the assignment of the contract is scheduled for today, October 25, at 3:00 pm, at that monument.

The technical project of this intervention was elaborated by the services of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the North, entity in charge of the management of the Monastery of Mancelos.

The project includes structural reinforcements of the building and various repairs to the roofs, walls, floors and gates (doors and windows).

Work is also planned in the interior, as well as the installation of various electrical, telecommunications and active safety equipment.

The intervention in the Monastery of Mancelos, which will take place over the next nine months, represents an investment of around 236,000 euros, co-financed in 85% by the Regional Operational Program of the North 2014/2020 (North 2020) through the European Investment Fund. Regional Development, and 15% by the Municipality of Amarante, under the "Rota do Românico: Heritage, Culture and Tourism - Tâmega" operation, presented by the Association of Municipalities of Baixo Tâmega.

Reformed in 1540, when it passed to the Dominican monks of the convent of São Gonçalo de Amarante, Mancelos was constituted as a monastery associated with the Canons Regrantes of Saint Augustine since the 12th century. By the surviving Romanesque vestiges it is probable that its edification was concluded in the following century.

In the interior stands out the collection of paintings, in the whole of which one, exposed in the main chapel, could represent the venerable Bishop Frei Bartolomeu dos Mártires.

In 1934, Mancelos was classified as a Property of Public Interest and in 2010 it was integrated into the tourist-cultural project of the Rota do Românico.
